There is a particular kind of beauty to getting married outside of New York City. The pace feels different. There is more room to breathe, more time to spend with the people you love, and a feeling that the wedding can become an entire weekend rather than simply one day.

After more than a decade of photographing weddings, I’ve found myself especially drawn to celebrations that feel connected to their surroundings. Beautiful architecture, good food, thoughtful design, changing light, and the landscape all become part of the story. That is one of the things I love about Upstate New York. You can be less than two hours from the city and feel completely somewhere else.

For couples planning a luxury wedding in Upstate New York, the venue is about much more than finding a beautiful place to get married. It shapes the pace of the weekend, the guest experience, the design, and even the way your photographs will feel years from now.

Some properties are historic and romantic. Others are modern and understated. Some feel like private estates, while others are designed around bringing everyone together for an entire weekend.

I’ve photographed weddings at several of these properties, while others are venues I’ve admired from afar and would genuinely love to photograph. What they all have in common is a strong sense of place and the ability to create a wedding experience that feels personal rather than formulaic.

Here are seven Upstate New York wedding venues I think are especially worth considering.

Blue Hill at Stone Barns

Blue Hill at Stone Barns is one of those places that feels incredibly specific to its location. Located in Pocantico Hills, just outside New York City, the property brings together architecture, farmland, food, and landscape in a way that feels sophisticated without being overly formal.

Having photographed weddings at Blue Hill, what stands out to me most is how naturally the setting becomes part of the photographs. The farm isn’t simply something you see in the distance. The landscape, the architecture, the fields, the changing light, and the movement of the day all become part of the experience.

And then there is the food. For couples who care deeply about the entire guest experience, Blue Hill offers something very different from a traditional wedding venue. The meal isn’t simply one element of the reception. It is part of the reason you’re there.

I also love that the property gives couples opportunities for photographs that don’t feel overly constructed. A walk through the grounds, a quiet moment together, guests enjoying cocktail hour, the light changing across the fields. Those photographs can feel just as important as the more formal portraits.

What makes Blue Hill special for photography

For me, the best photographs happen when the setting and the people feel connected. Blue Hill has that naturally. The goal isn’t to create a photograph that could have been taken anywhere. It’s to make the photographs feel unmistakably like your wedding at Blue Hill.

Best for: Couples who value exceptional food, thoughtful design, beautiful surroundings, and a wedding experience that feels elevated without feeling overly formal.

Troutbeck

Troutbeck has the feeling of a country house that has been part of the landscape for generations. Located in Amenia, in the Hudson Valley, the historic property combines architecture, gardens, open grounds, and intimate gathering spaces. It feels romantic without feeling overly precious, which is part of its appeal.

I haven’t photographed a wedding at Troutbeck myself, but it is exactly the kind of property that I find compelling as a photographer. The variety of spaces allows a wedding weekend to unfold rather than feeling like everything has to happen in one room.

There is something particularly appealing about the idea of guests arriving, settling in, and spending several days together. A welcome dinner can have a completely different feeling from the wedding day, which can then feel different again from a farewell brunch. That progression creates opportunities for photographs that go beyond the traditional wedding-day checklist.

And aesthetically, I love the combination of history and relaxed elegance. It doesn’t need to be overly styled to feel beautiful.

What makes Troutbeck interesting for photography

A venue with history gives photographs a sense of permanence. The architecture provides structure, while the gardens and surrounding landscape create softer, more spontaneous moments.

For a photographer, that balance is wonderful because it allows the photographs to move between editorial portraits and the quieter, documentary moments happening around them.

Best for: Couples drawn to historic architecture, country-house romance, beautiful gardens, and the idea of gathering their guests together for a full wedding weekend.

INNESS

INNESS feels like a more contemporary interpretation of the Upstate New York wedding weekend. Located in Accord in the Hudson Valley, the property combines modern architecture with the surrounding landscape, along with accommodations, dining, and activities that encourage guests to stay and enjoy the property rather than simply arrive for the wedding.

The architecture is a big part of what makes INNESS interesting. The clean lines and natural materials create a beautiful contrast with the surrounding landscape, and the result feels modern without feeling cold.

I haven’t photographed a wedding at INNESS, but I find the property especially appealing for couples whose style is a little more understated and contemporary. It doesn’t feel like a traditional wedding venue—and I think that’s precisely the point.

What makes INNESS interesting for photography

I love the idea of photographing a wedding here with a little less emphasis on creating the “perfect” photograph and more attention to atmosphere. The architecture gives you a strong visual foundation, the landscape brings softness, and the weekend itself creates the moments in between.

A morning coffee with friends. A walk around the property. Getting ready with the windows open. Dinner outside. Guests lingering long after the scheduled end of an event.

Those are the photographs that can make a wedding gallery feel like a memory rather than simply a collection of portraits.

Best for: Couples who love contemporary design, natural surroundings, understated luxury, and a relaxed wedding-weekend experience.

Valley Rock Inn & Mountain Club

Valley Rock Inn & Mountain Club offers a very different kind of wedding experience. Located in Sloatsburg, it feels less like a traditional wedding venue and more like a private escape.

That distinction matters. There is something incredibly appealing about gathering your closest friends and family somewhere beautiful and allowing the weekend to unfold around them. Rather than moving guests from one conventional wedding space to another, the property itself becomes part of the experience.

The architecture, gardens, surrounding landscape, meals, conversations, and quiet moments all have a place in the story.

What makes Valley Rock Inn special for photography

This is the type of wedding where I want to photograph the entire weekend, not just the ceremony and reception. The welcome dinner, people arriving, friends catching up, parents spending time together, the couple taking a few minutes alone, a long dinner, the end of the night.

When everyone stays together, you get something that is difficult to recreate at a traditional one-day wedding: time.

And time gives people permission to be themselves. Those unscripted moments are often where the most meaningful photographs come from.

Best for: Couples looking for a private, residential-feeling celebration where the wedding feels like an intimate getaway with the people they love.

Deer Mountain Inn

For couples looking for something more intimate and immersed in nature, Deer Mountain Inn offers a completely different experience. Located in the Catskills, the property sits among woods, open lawns, trails, and mountain views. It has the feeling of a retreat where guests can actually slow down and enjoy being there.

That intimacy is what appeals to me most. Not every wedding needs to be a large production. Sometimes the most memorable celebrations are the ones where everyone is close enough to actually spend time together.

The Catskills setting also gives the property a strong seasonal personality. The photographs from a summer wedding would have an entirely different feeling from an autumn celebration surrounded by changing leaves or an intimate winter weekend.

What makes Deer Mountain Inn special for photography

The landscape doesn’t need much help. The woods, open spaces, mountains, fireplaces, and natural light already provide so much atmosphere.

That allows the photographs to remain simple. A couple walking together, guests gathered outside, a quiet moment before dinner, the glow of the evening. For me, that is often where the beauty is.

Best for: Couples planning a more intimate Catskills wedding weekend who value nature, privacy, and an understated sense of luxury.

Wildflower Farms

Wildflower Farms is another Upstate New York property that I find particularly compelling. Located in Gardiner at the base of the Shawangunk Ridge, the property brings together expansive landscapes, gardens, farm-inspired elements, architecture, and the level of hospitality you’d expect from a luxury resort.

I haven’t photographed a wedding at Wildflower Farms, but it immediately stands out to me as a property that I would love to photograph. What I find especially interesting is the relationship between the architecture and the landscape. The surroundings aren’t simply there to provide a pretty backdrop. They are a fundamental part of the experience.

That creates the possibility for photographs that feel very connected to the Hudson Valley.

What makes Wildflower Farms interesting for photography

I would want to photograph the landscape as much as the people. The changing seasons alone would give each wedding its own personality. Summer brings a completely different feeling than fall, and winter changes the pace entirely.

That is one of the things I love about photographing weddings in this part of New York: the setting can become part of the visual identity of the wedding.

For couples who want something refined but don’t want to lose the feeling of being surrounded by nature, Wildflower Farms offers an especially interesting combination.

Best for: Couples who love contemporary country design, nature, seasonal beauty, and an elevated wedding-weekend experience.

Cedar Lakes Estate

Cedar Lakes Estate is the kind of property that makes you understand why wedding weekends have become so appealing. Located in the Hudson Valley, the estate offers a private setting where couples and their guests can spend an entire weekend together.

There are lakes, mountains, wooded areas, outdoor spaces, accommodations, and multiple settings throughout the property, which means the wedding doesn’t have to feel like one continuous event. It can have chapters: a welcome dinner, a morning with friends, time by the lake, the ceremony, cocktails, dinner, dancing, a late-night bonfire, and breakfast the next morning.

Having photographed weddings at Cedar Lakes, one of the things I appreciate most is how much opportunity there is to tell the story beyond the expected moments.

And that is really what I want from a wedding weekend. Not just the beautiful centerpiece. Not just the first dance. Not just the portrait of the couple looking perfectly composed.

I want the photographs that remind you who was there. The friend who made everyone laugh. Your mother watching you get ready. Your father holding back tears. The people dancing at the end of the night. The quiet five minutes you managed to steal together. The landscape you woke up to the next morning.

Those details are what make the photographs personal.

What makes Cedar Lakes special for photography

The scale of the property allows the photographs to feel expansive, but the full-property experience also creates intimacy. When everyone stays together, you aren’t just photographing a wedding. You’re photographing a little world that exists for a few days.

And I love that.

Best for: Couples who want a true wedding weekend experience where their guests can stay together, explore the property, and celebrate without feeling rushed.

How Do You Choose the Right Upstate New York Wedding Venue?

I don’t think there is one “best” wedding venue. The right venue depends on what you want the weekend to feel like.

For exceptional food and a strong sense of place: Blue Hill at Stone Barns

For historic architecture and country-house romance: Troutbeck

For contemporary design and understated luxury: INNESS

For a private, residential feeling: Valley Rock Inn & Mountain Club

For an intimate Catskills retreat: Deer Mountain Inn

For modern country luxury surrounded by nature: Wildflower Farms

For a full-property wedding weekend: Cedar Lakes Estate

The most important question isn’t necessarily, “Which venue looks the best?”

It’s: How do you want your wedding to feel?

Do you want your guests to spend three days together? Do you want dinner to be as important as the dancing? Do you want the landscape to play a major role? Do you want something formal and elegant, or relaxed and intimate? Do you want your photographs to feel editorial, documentary, or a little bit of both?

Those answers will probably lead you to the right place.
